Downtown Seating

Benches and bistro tables make downtown a place to linger, not just pass through. In 2022, Rochester Main Street lined the Cocheco Riverwalk with tables and chairs where residents and visitors can relax, read, or enjoy a meal outdoors, and the bright blue bistro sets have become one of the district’s small signatures since.

Where the seating lives

The Riverwalk tables are the centerpiece: a place to eat lunch by the water, wait out a Saturday errand, or read with the river going past. Benches sit at intervals through the downtown for the shoppers and elders who want a rest mid-loop, and our other projects add more, from the Factory Court patio to the Wyndotte Alley deck.

Seating is quiet economic development. People who sit stay longer, and people who stay longer visit more storefronts. It is one of the cheapest upgrades a downtown can buy, which is why it stays on the Design Committee’s workplan year after year.

Upkeep is part of the job

Like everything we build, seating needs ongoing care, and New England weather is not gentle. Tables get refastened, benches get fresh paint, and the Riverwalk sets get hauled in and out with the seasons. Your support helps us maintain what’s already downtown while we add more.
