Clean-ups
Rochester Cares each spring plus year-round litter sweeps, Riverwalk weeding, and graffiti cleanup keep downtown Rochester NH welcoming.
Rochester Cares, our annual community cleanup, brings volunteers together each spring to get downtown ready for the summer season. Volunteers arrive early for coffee and donuts, then head out with gloves, rakes, and shovels to spread mulch delivered by the Department of Public Works, clear litter, and tackle projects throughout downtown. Afterward, local restaurants provide food as a thank-you.
Year-round upkeep
Smaller volunteer litter sweeps continue throughout the year, so there’s always a chance to pitch in. The ongoing work covers Riverwalk weeding, litter sweeps, and graffiti removal: our downtown has a few spots where graffiti shows up, and we keep wipes and the right cleaning materials on hand so a small group can handle most of it in an afternoon.
Why the unglamorous work matters
Downtown improvements require ongoing care to stay safe, welcoming, and effective. The Wyndotte Alley deck, the murals, the lighting, the planters, and the seating all need regular attention, from deck repairs to UV protection on murals to replacing worn light strands. New England weather does not take a season off.
Taking care of what has already been built also matters when we go after future grants and partnerships. Funders and sponsors want to see completed projects well cared for, and cleanup days are where that stewardship shows.

When is the next Rochester Cares cleanup?
It runs each spring to get downtown ready for the summer season, and the date is posted on the events calendar. Coffee and donuts are on for anyone who arrives early.
What should I bring to a cleanup?
Yourself, plus gloves, a rake, or a shovel if you have them. The Rochester Department of Public Works delivers mulch for spreading, and downtown restaurants provide food afterward as a thank-you.
Can I help outside the organized days?
Yes. Small groups can adopt a litter sweep or graffiti cleanup any time of year. We supply the graffiti wipes and cleaning materials, so contact us and we'll get you set up on a route.
